Hail hits two policies.

Hail does not care that the roof and the car share a driveway.

Central Florida gets those afternoon cells that turn the street white for ten minutes. Then the sun comes back. Then you walk outside and the shingles look chewed and the hood looks like a golf ball lost a fight. One storm. Two files.

There's coverage for that. Not as one "storm policy." As two different contracts, if you actually have them.

The house is a property claim

The dwelling — HO3 if you live there, a landlord form if someone else does — is where the roof lives. Hail is a weather peril most property forms are built to consider. "Built to consider" is not "will pay." Age of the roof, type of roof, actual cash value versus replacement, hurricane deductibles versus other-weather deductibles, and whether the damage is cosmetic or through the mat: those are the questions. Florida has spent years arguing about roofs. We are not going to settle them in a blog post.

What we will say: take photos before you call a roofer who also happens to love your insurance company. Date them. If the interior is wet, say so. If it is not, say that too. A licensed 2-20 reviews the form you have. This page does not.

The car is not on the house

The sedan in the driveway is not a dwelling. If it has dents from ice, that is comprehensive on an auto policy — if comprehensive is on the policy. Liability-only does not fix hail. Collision is the other car, the pole, the parking lot. Comprehensive is the weather, the theft, the deer, the falling coconut, the parking-lot mystery ding you did not cause by driving.

We are not pitching personal auto as the product of the week. We are naming the file so you do not open a homeowners claim and expect a body shop check.

Two calls can be the same afternoon. Two deductibles can both apply. The roof deductible and the auto deductible are not one pile of money.

What people mash together

"The storm hit us" is not a coverage grant. Screens, lanais, pool cages, and a car under a tree are four different sentences. A cage can be property. A windshield can be auto. A neighbor's tree can be a liability conversation that is not yours. Guessing from the radar app is how people miss the endorsement they needed, or file the wrong carrier first and stall both claims.

Flood is still not hail. Backup is still not hail. We already wrote those. Hail is ice from the sky. Keep the names honest.

What to bring

Address. Year and type of roof. Photos of the house and, separately, of each vehicle. Whether the cars have comprehensive. Where they were sitting. Prior roof or hail claims. We quote the same day when the market is open. We do not promise a check. We do not quote prices in a caption or on this page.
