BOP is not just GL.
GL will not rebuild the shop.
A lot of Florida small businesses buy general liability because a landlord, a city, or a client asked for a certificate. That certificate is real. It is also only one job: injury and damage you cause other people. It does not put the roof back. It does not replace the cooler. It does not pay you to rent a tent in the parking lot while the interior dries.
There's coverage for that. It just is not "more GL."
What GL is for
Someone slips. A customer’s property gets wrecked. A vendor wants to be additional insured on the lease. General liability is the form that conversation usually lives on. It is the "you hurt them / you broke their stuff" policy, subject to the exclusions you actually have — professional advice, autos, employees, pollution, the usual list we will not pretend is short.
GL is not a building policy. If the only thing you bought is GL, you bought half of what a fire or a burst pipe cares about.
What a BOP is doing
A businessowners policy is a package. For a lot of shops, offices, and smaller contractors who fit the class, it puts property and liability in one form: the building you own or the contents you rent around, business personal property, and the GL-shaped coverage people were asking for on the certificate.
It is a common starting point. It is not magic. Eligibility is picky. Some operations do not fit. Some need a separate property form plus a separate GL. Some need inland marine for tools in the truck. Some need E&O because the work is advice, not a mop. If you only sell ideas, a BOP will not turn into professional liability because we called it a package.
Florida adds weather. Wind, water, and ordinance-or-law on an old block in Winter Park or a strip bay off 50 are still questions on the property side of the BOP, not on the certificate of insurance you emailed last Tuesday.
The mix-up we see
"We’re covered. We have liability." Then the kitchen floods and there is no contents limit. Or the building is the landlord’s problem until the lease says you insure the improvements, and nobody read that sentence.
Certificates describe what was bound. They are not extra coverage. Additional insured is not "they pay for our stuff." Loss of income is not automatic on every GL. We will not list fake limits here. We will say: bring the lease and the last certificate. A licensed 2-20 will tell you whether you have a BOP, a GL, or a piece of paper that sounds like both.
What to bring when you request a review
Legal name. How you operate. Address of each location. Class / what you actually do all day. Revenue. Employees. Building owned or leased. Rough values for building and contents. Prior claims. Who asked for the certificate.
